Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly known as Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam and has become one of the most interesting tourist attractions. For many travelers, Ho Chi Minh is the starting or ending point of a Southeast Asian vacation that includes destinations in Cambodia. For making your own Cambodia tours from Ho Chi Minh City, you have four major choices of transportation.

1. Flights

The fastest and the most convenient way to get Cambodia from Saigon is by airplane ( about 30 minutes flying). Tourists can catch a flight from Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap Airport in Cambodia. Flights are available with Vietnam Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, and Qatar Airways. Including getting in and out of the airports, waiting at the airport lounge, travel time is about four hours.
RouteFlyingTimeFlights frequency/ day
HCMC - Siem Riep 1 hour 05 min 4 flights/day
HCMC - Phnom Penh 55 min 3 flights/day

2. Bus

Phnom Penh is about 230 km from Ho Chi Minh City if you are traveling on the road. Instead of the airplane, you could get to Phnom Penh from Saigon by bus, usually the cheapest option, a trip takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, including a border stop. You will pass the border crossing called Moc Bai on the Vietnamese side and Bavet on the Cambodian side.
Some of the worth-considering bus providers including Vietnamese firms like Mai Linh, Sapaco or GSG, and Cambodian providers such as Mekong Express, Capitol Tour, and 168 Bus. The bus ticket costs you about $6 ~ $12 depending on the service quality of each bus company.

3. Speedboat

Making the trip to Cambodia from Saigon by boat will be a unique experience. Check with a travel agent about speedboat trips up the Mekong to Phnom Penh. The typical package consists of a bus trip or " Xe Loi" ( See above slide photo) from your hotel in Chau Doc to Boat Jetty in the early morning, boarding a boat and spending about 4 hours on the river. Passengers will arrive in Phnom Penh in the early afternoon. There are many types of boat from decent boats to luxury ones. And speedboat service is available from Chau Doc in Vietnam to Phnom Penh with prices of $19 ~ $50. Contact our travel consultants to get you agent rate.

4. Mekong Cruise

In order to make your Cambodia tours from Ho Chi Minh City more special and interesting, you can choose a cruise trip via Mekong River, which is the best way to explore the beautiful part of Cambodia and Vietnam.
There can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied as the Mekong River. Indeed there can be no more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling Vietnam delta and the tranquility of Cambodia. Tourists have a chance to travel from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life of Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Dong Thap, An Giang provinces and continue to Phnom Penh/ Siem Reap, Cambodia. Visitors may choose to travel to Cambodia on luxury Mekong Cruises such as Jayavarman, The Jahan, Aqua Mekong, Pandaw, Indochine etc.

If you are planning a trip to Cambodia from Ho Chi Minh city, we recommend you our best selling Vietnam & Cambodia tours: Luxury Mekong Experience - 8 Days. Just immerse yourself in the sublime beauty of the Mekong and its river life. Travel from Saigon’s modern bustle to the calm waters of Tonle Sap Lake and into the ancient Khmer Kingdom; explore South Vietnam and Cambodia on a tour that takes you along the meandering Mekong River all the way to Siem Reap - the hometown of Angkor Wat while you enjoy the best accommodation and luxury facility that Vietnam and Cambodia have to offer.

*Note: Upon arrival, you can get a visa at the airports or the border crossing in Cambodia, or Visa to Vietnam should apply for the visa online in advance. Visa to Cambodia is so much easier, you could get it at the Immigration Office located right at the River Bank ( See slide photos above). It costs you 30$ plus  extra 3-4 dollars of processing fee.

Dear Shibaji,

Please be informed that it takes around 6 hour driving from Ho Chi Minh city to Phnom Penh and 5 hour driving from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap (without any visits). Therefore, it is impossible to visit Siem Reap and Phnom Penh for 1 or 2 days.
You should spend at least 4 - 5 days to visit the most highlights of our country.
We sent you more details regarding your request via email. Please check it and let us know your comments.
Have a good day.

Hello Elsaeid,

Thank you for your kind request.
Please note that there is no speed boat from Saigon to Cambodia (But there are Mekong river cruises which take longer time and cost more).
You just can take a bus trip from Saigon to Phnom Penh (6 hours), then to Siem Reap (4.5 hours).
Otherwise you may travel to Mekong Delta, then to Chau Doc to take speed boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh (5 hours).
For Cambodia visa: You can apply Cambodia e-visa in advance via the following link: https://www.evisa.gov.kh/
or upon arrival with the fee of 34USD/person. Just show the immigration officers your passports, photos. The procedure is quick and convenient.
Also, please make sure you have multiple entries visa in advance to get back to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Do you sell boat trip from Chau Doc to Phnompenh in the afternoon?
My family traveling Mekong in coming Apr and want to start day late and spend the morning in Chau Doc town. The morning boat seems too rush for us.
Thank you,

There is no speed boat from Chau Doc depart in the afternoon.
All speed boats depart Chau Doc In the morning and get to Phnom Penh around noon time.
And they comeback from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc in the afternoon(1 round /day)
If it is too rush for you, you should spend one more night in Chau Doc and travel on the following day.
Please feel free to let us know if you need our assistance to plan a memorable trip for your family.

Dear Tran Lan,

Please be informed that it takes 6 - 7 hour driving from Saigon to Phnom Penh, so you cannot take the day trip to Phnom Penh from Saigon by car.
You can take the flight from Saigon to Phnom Penh but Cambodian government require at least one night stay in Cambodia.
For Cambodia visa: It is very easy to obtain it on arrival airport. Just fill in the form and you will get it in within 10 minutes. It costs you 30USD/person and you pay directly to officers. Travelers are also required to show your photo (3x4cm) and their valid passport. If you do not bring your photo, no problem, the immigration officers will help and charge you 1 US dollar/photo.
More Cambodia visa information is provided at: www.cambodiatours.com/visa.html
I sent you detail information via email. Please let us know if you can extend more time for this trip.

Why choose Cambodia Tours

Travel Information & Requirements

Cambodia is a captivating destination filled with ancient history, breathtaking temples, and stunning natural landscapes. Here’s a quick guide to help you make the most of your trip:

Top Destinations

  1. Siem Reap: Famous for the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex, Siem Reap is a paradise for history buffs and architecture lovers. Be sure to explore other magnificent temples like Ta Prohm, known for its giant tree roots, and Bayon with its enigmatic smiling faces.
  2. Phnom Penh: The bustling capital offers a blend of historical and cultural attractions. Visit the Royal Palace, take a somber tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife and delicious street food.
  3. Sihanoukville: Renowned for its picturesque beaches and lively atmosphere, Sihanoukville is ideal for unwinding by the sea and indulging in various water activities like snorkeling and diving.
  4. Battambang: Experience traditional Cambodian life in this charming city, featuring French-colonial architecture, serene countryside, and off-the-beaten-path jungle temples.
  5. Tonle Sap Lake: The largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia is known for its unique floating villages. A boat tour offers an intriguing glimpse into the daily lives of local communities.

Best Time to Visit

  • November to February: This is Cambodia's dry season, making it the perfect time for sightseeing and outdoor adventures, with cooler temperatures and clear skies.

Travel Tips

  • Dress Modestly: When visiting temples, wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees out of respect for local customs.
  • Safety First: Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar places.
  • Try Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on traditional Cambodian dishes like fish amok, a creamy coconut curry, or Khmer curry, which is milder and often served with rice or noodles.
  • Getting Around: Tuk-tuks and motorbikes are popular for short trips. For longer journeys, consider hiring a car with a driver or taking a bus.
  • Visa Requirements: To enter Cambodia, a visa is required, and you can apply online or upon arrival at major entry points. There are two main types:
    • Tourist Visa (T): This single-entry visa costs $36 (including a $6 processing fee), is valid for 3 months from the issue date, and allows a stay of up to 30 days. A passport valid for at least six months, a digital passport-sized photo, and a valid credit card are required. Citizens from several Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore, are exempt.
    • Business Visa (E): This single-entry visa costs $42 (including a $7 processing fee), is valid for 3 months from the date of issue, and also allows a 30-day stay. The requirements are similar: a passport with six months of validity, a digital photo, and a credit card for payment.
  • E-Arrival Card: If you're flying into Cambodia, complete an e-Arrival Card (CeA) online within seven days of your arrival.
  • Registration: All visitors must be registered with the Foreigner Present in Cambodia System (FPCS). Your hotel or host will usually handle this process.
  • Health Precautions: Stay up to date on vaccinations, including those for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and typhoid fever. Avoid swimming in freshwater lakes or rivers due to the risk of schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection.
  • Beat the Crowds: To avoid large crowds at popular sites like Angkor Wat, plan your visit early in the morning. For a quieter experience, take a midday break and explore less crowded spots during peak hours.
  • Sunrise at Angkor Wat: Many visitors recommend starting your first day with a sunrise tour of Angkor Wat. The ticket lines are usually shorter early in the morning, and the sight of the sun rising behind the ancient temple is unforgettable.
